Ghostwire: Tokyo marked its second anniversary with a special in-game gift for players, courtesy of Tango Gameworks and Bethesda. The freebie, a 2nd Anniversary frame and stamp for the photo mode was released to commemorate the occasion on March 25, 2024.

The game initially gained attention for its unique atmosphere and magical gameplay, incorporating Japanese Shugendo gestures into its mechanics. Despite positive reviews upon its release on PC and PS5 in 2022, Ghostwire: Tokyo faced challenges due to its publishing circumstances, being technically Xbox-published games exclusive to Sony’s console for a period following Bethesda’s merger with Microsoft.

The Xbox Series X|S version of Ghostwire: Tokyo encountered performance issues upon its launch in April 2023. However, the game’s popularity persisted, with many players utilizing the photo mode to capture the intricacies of its real-life urban setting, making it a favoured location for in-game photography.

The minor update managed to capture the attention of Ghostwire: Tokyo fans once again, with a positive response seen across social media platforms. Many fans expressed their support for the studio and called for a sequel, while others fondly remembered Shinji Mikami’s involvement in the game’s development before he departed from Tango Gameworks in 2023.

However, some fans voiced their disappointment as the game’s anniversary approached, noting the absence of any announced plans for additional DLC content from Tango Gameworks. Concerns were also raised about performance issues on Xbox and the unexpected inclusion of Denuvo on the PC version, leading some to caution against purchasing these versions of Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Despite these challenges, Ghostwire: Tokyo remains a standout title known for its unique gameplay experience on both consoles and PCs. The enthusiastic response to a seemingly minor update indicates that players are still invested in the game’s world and are eager to explore more content or potentially anticipate a successor that captures the same distinctive atmosphere.
